Essay: How would owning a tiny house change my life?

It doesn’t matter the size of the house; it’s the nameplate hanging over the door that makes a home. A tiny house would be just as much a home as mansions. But its not just the house that would change my life, it’s the lifestyle that comes with it. The size of the house would inspire closeness, stewardship, and would set priorities in proper places.

First, a tiny house creates closeness with the earth. In my mind I can’t picture a tiny home without a blossoming garden. The “tiny” lifestyle has a homegrown and home made quality. In a tiny house I would grow a big garden and spend time on the porch whittling. The tiny lifestyle also creates closeness in the sense of relationships. People literally become closer by living in a tiny house. It’s a comfortable place people will want to gather and visit.

Next, a big life-changing factor of this lifestyle is that a tiny house doesn’t tolerate clutter. There is a selection process needed for everything I would take into the house.  Do I need it? Do I use it often? A greater sense of stewardship is made within the walls of a tiny house because it’s important to keep only good and important things. There is no space to waste.

Lastly, a tiny house would change priorities. There wouldn’t be an emphasis on what I own but rather how I live my life. There would be time and money to travel while not being tied down to a massive debt. I would be more grateful for what I have and use.   In the end, if I owned a tiny house I would never sell it because it wouldn’t mean as much to anyone else.
